Why "Green" Matters.
According to Nature.com, container ships carry 90% of global consumer goods such as clothes and food (non-bulk cargo). The seaborne container trade has grown from 100 million tons in 1980 to about 1.6 billion tons in 2014. Because of this, the human and environmental costs of shipping are vast. Low-grade marine fuel oil contains 3,500 times more sulfur than road diesel. Large ships pollute the air in hub ports, accounting for one-third to half of the airborne pollutants in major cities around the world. Particulates emitted from ships cause 60,000 cardiopulmonary and lung-cancer deaths each year worldwide. Expanding harbors to take vast ships destroys coastal ecosystems. And scrapping fleets of obsolete smaller ships pollute seas and soils, and damages workers' health, especially in the developing world.
Here at LARC, we have a solution: green shipping. Our proprietary technology makes it possible for companies to scale while still operating with an eco-friendly mindset. Our CRATE allows for savings in cost, time, and damage and also has the potential to save an unfathomable amount of trees. Shipping in wooden crates is a thing of the past- it costs around the same as the mini-supercomputer smartphone in your pocket and is not smart, interactive, or well-designed in any way. Ancient Egyptians used wooden crates to transport goods and materials, and so does the majority of the players in the trillion-dollar 21st-century shipping industry. It’s time for this method to evolve.
